LG breaks the thiness record...

Okay, so it's not quite the thinnest TV ever; that goes to some fancy pants OLED stuff that nobody will be able to afford for about 20 years, but it IS the thinnest LCD TV yet, measuirng just 5.9mm at their thinnest. Woah. That's tiny! I'm sure it'll look good on your wall....but is the extra cash for something just a little bit thinner really worth it....Read more

How to play old games in a new computer

Memories of the games we had played in our younger days are always fresh and vivid in our memories. Even though every thing has since changed since the last time we had played the game but given the option, we would always like to try it out again even if our computer and its systems are new.

Admit it - you still crave a good game of scrolling Super Mario or Dig Dug just like you did "back in the day." We all do because playing them brings back some of the fondest memories.  But it isn't easy to play these games the way we used to. Unless we've kept the systems and cartridges of the past in good working condition, our only trip down this jagged pixel lane is through a little known gem called emulation.

Through emulation, you can play some of your favorite games from the past including games made for Commodore, Atari, and Nintendo. Emulation refers to the ability of a program or device to imitate another program or device and it tricks the software into believing that a device is really some other device. It is also possible for a computer to emulate another type of computer. For example, there are programs that enable an Apple Macintosh to emulate a PC. 1

All that gobbledy gook doesn't really mean too much until you discover that with the right emulator, your computer can play all your old favorite games. And the news gets even better. You can download emulators from the Internet - free. You can download Amiga, Commodore, GameBoy, Playstation 1, and Nintendo emulators plus you can download the games (ROMs) that these machines play.

Our favorite emulator is the ZSNES Emulator. This particular program emulates the old Super Nintendo console and you can learn more about it yourself by visiting http://www.zsnes.com. This program comes with an extensive help file and walks you through the process of setting up a copy on your own PC. At the very least, your system needs a 486/100 processor, 14.5MB of RAM, a VGA card, and a Sound Blaster or 100% compatible sound card. However a system with a fast P200 or higher Pentium processor,  32MB of RAM, VGA card, and Sound Blaster 16 or 100% compatible sound card yields the most realistic results.

But don't think that just because a console is on the computer - you can't enjoy your favorite gaming accessories. The ZSNES Emulator let's users maneuver around games with the keyboard and a joystick. But enough about the emulator - You probably want to know what kind of games you can play, right?

Called ROMs, you can play any game on your PC that you played on the Super Nintendo System including:

* Bomberman 5

* Super Battleship

* Beavis n' Butthead

* Bustamove

* Clue

* Dragonballz

* DreamTV

* Final Fantasy 4

* Frogger

* The Great Waldo Search

* Inspector Gadget

* Jeopardy Deluxee

* John Madden Football

* Mariokart

* Marvel Superheroes

* Megamans Soccer

* Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

* Monopoly

* Mortal Kombat 2

* Pinocchio

* Power Rangers

* Race Driving

* Carmen San Diego

* SimAnt

* SimCity

* SimCity 2000

* Super Mario RPG

* Sonic

* Space Football

* Starfox

* Streetfighter 2

* Super Black Bass

* Super Ninja Boy

* Super Punch-Out!!

* Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

* Themepark

* Troddlers

* Utopia

* Vortex

* Wacky Race

* Wheel of Fortune

* Wings 2

* Wordtris

* World Soccer 94

* Yoshis Island

* Zelda 3

* ... and tons more.

Downloading these games is a simple matter of finding them online and there are plenty of websites that host them. Try http://www.everyvideogame.com for starters.

Be aware that there's an issue with downloading these games and it's a legal one. Basically, you're not allowed to download and play any game that you don't already own on a cartridge. If can abide by this law, you can revisit the past, in the present, on your brand new PC.

Creative ideas for video game developers

One of the most satisfying job is that of creating video games. One thing we should remember is that it is not easy to come up with new ideas for video games. As the success of a video game depends on its freshness and excitement we should find out ways and means to create a new and unique video game. Here are some ways through which The you can generate some creative ideas to keep your video game as fun to play from beginning to end.

1. Make it funny. Humor has a wonderful way of transforming the seemingly dreadful boring into something that's not only tolerable, but engaging as well. And if boredom is an illness, laughter is its cure. If you can inject jokes, funny imagery, or goofy characters into your game, your players will relax and associate your game with good feelings - a definite formula for success.

2. Let your mind wander off the beaten path. Since much of our thinking is associative anyway, there's no reason why you couldn't manifest this association into your video game. When one idea makes you think of another, include it as part of a video game no matter how illogical the connection is (at first). Remember that video games are your platform for creativity. It's time to be a little wild and a little unconventional. Without this free-form thinking, we surely wouldn't have the creative gems that we have today. You can always restore a sense of logic back into the game at an appropriate time.

3. Make your dreams come true. Literally, turn your dreams into video game scenarios. Had a nightmare lately? Include the scary thing in the game. Had a ridiculously stupid dream lately? Include it in the game as a detour or distraction. Sometimes dreams can be more interesting as life, and as a video game developer, you want your games to be the same. Keep a dream journal and write down those bizarre experiences you have at night. Your gamers will thank you for it.

4. Copy nature. Let's be honest - Nature is pretty weird. We have bees flying around and pollinating plants. We have water evaporating into the sky and then falling down from clouds as rain. Childbirth is a strange phenomenon itself, and germs - the smallest thing on the planet can bring down a herd of elephants. If you could emulate some of this crazy stuff in your own video games, you will have done what every man secretly wishes he could do himself. And that's take nature into your own hands and shape it into the reality you want! But don't copy nature faithfully. Twist it around. For example, instead of bees flying around and pollinating plants, your video game could have 3-inch aliens flying around and pollinating brainwashed FBI agents. Starting to get the idea?

5. Dig into History. Another good resource for video game material is our own history - but not the boring stuff. We're talking about the good stuff. The embarrassing stuff. Look for odd and weird news online and include the asinine things that people have done in the past as part of your game's plot. Your players won't believe what they're seeing!

6. Go Metaphor Happy. Metaphors are figures of speech in which expressions are used to refer to something that it does not literally denote. It simply suggests a similarity.  We're not sure, but we're pretty convinced that a lot of the space ships in video games are based on what we call the "nuts and bolts" metaphor. If you look closely at the designs of some of these vehicles, and then look at some of the tools you have in your toolbox, you'll start to see a similarity among the two like we did. You can do the same in your video games to come up with some really unique imagery and situations.

Computer Training: Join free Online Training Classes

If you have decided to get yourself trained in Computers but somehow your budget does not permit you to join a training school right now then there is no need to worry about it. Today the world has become a better place to live in and there are many options available which were not there about a decade back. Today there are many free online computer training centers which offers free training and other materials and software’s to those who are interested in getting. These online computer training centers can teach you all about computers right from its basics to the HTML (Hyper-text-mark-up language used to build websites) in the Internet.

If you can plug in to a free online computer training system or set of resources, you can literally teach yourself almost anything.  There are a variety of different ways to go about this process, so let's start at the beginning.  The very first thing, before you ever embark on your online adventure, is to determine exactly what you want to learn from your free online computer training.  Pick out your base subject, and then you can get started researching online sources for free training.  For our examples, let's take the subject of HTML and see where we can get some free online computer training to learn HTML.

For the first step, let's get on a major search engine like Yahoo or Google and do a search for the term 'free HTML training' or 'free online computer training'.  You will find quite a few results come up in reference to these terms, but don't be fooled.  Most of these won't really have free training, maybe just a free sample class or two.  Some of these won't have anything free at all, they either buy an advertising slot or they develop their website in a way to show up higher in the results to get your attention.  Remember, what you are looking for is a site that is truly going to give you free online computer training.

Sometimes the best results for free online computer training can come in the form of free forums or bulletin boards.  For those of you who are really new to the Internet, let's talk about this for a minute.  Forums and bulletin boards are web pages that allow visitors to sign up as 'users', usually for free.  Once you are registered with these sights, you can then post and respond to others on the forums or boards and ask questions.  The beauty of these resources is that there are literally hundreds of them out there on almost any subject imaginable, especially dealing with computers.  So, for someone looking for free online computer training, they are a great resource and should definitely not be overlooked.  They can contain a great wealth of information from other users who have asked questions and had them answered on the boards.

Another great source of free online computer training consists of e-zines and newsletters.  Do another search and use the terms 'e-zine' and 'newsletters' in conjunction with the free online computer training you are looking for.  Most of these will be free as well, and you will have to subscribe for a short time to separate those that truly want to share some information with you versus those that are really only looking to sell you a product or a service through their correspondence.  Overall it can be said that where there is a will, there is a way, especially when it comes to free online computer training.

Choosing the perfect computer training class

If you have a desire to learn about computers and have been looking for a computer training class you must remember that today there are a variety of computer classes and training institutes offering different kinds of programs. Therefore it is essential and important to know the level of your experience in computers so as to select the right class for you. There are many persons who would just like to enhance their personal knowledge of computers or others who would like to add some skills in order to develop their careers. In such cases the courses offered at junior level colleges and institutes in their area would be perfect for them.

For those who are a complete novice, a basic in computing is highly recommended.  In this computer training class you will learn how a computer works, the history of computing, computer configurations, etc.  A basic class is just what it says - the basics.  From keyboarding, using the mouse, different types of computers, operating systems, etc., it is the beginner's place to start when learning about computers and computing.  Some basic computer training classes also offer information on the basics of networking, from network printing using the LAN or local area network, to the use of a WAN or wide area network, such as the Internet.  If you have the option to take such a class and you are a novice to computers, this is highly recommended.  The information can be invaluable in everyday troubleshooting situations when you are looking to save the high dollar service fees of on-site technicians.

For the intermediate computer user, there are a variety of computer training classes that are available.  On subject ranging from the internal workings of the computer and upgrading various components to building a system from scratch, there is a lot to learn at this level.  Perhaps you know about the internal workings of a computer, but don't know much about how software works and runs.

At this stage you can also take a computer training class covering the basics of programming.  While there are a variety of languages available today to program in, it is highly recommended that you learn C# (pronounced C sharp).  It is on the cutting edge of programming and is a new object oriented language developed by Microsoft based on the older C and C+ programming languages.  Perhaps you are more of a rogue, however, and are more interested in going against the flow of 'big brother' and 'big business'.  Another highly recommended computer training class would be in the programming language of PERL (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language).  This language is used to create CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs that are in high demand and use on the web today.

For the advanced user, you will find there is always something to learn in a computer training class.  Maybe you are very experienced in programming, hardware configuration, operating systems, upgrades, troubleshooting, etc.  Depending on your level of expertise, you might consider taking a course of action to get your certification in a various field of computer knowledge.  Not only will this improve your resume and look good as far as expanding your career horizons, you will gain a great feeling of accomplishment when you complete the computer training class needed for certification....Read more

A brief overview of the growth of the Computer Training Industry

Modern math’s as it is now started with the adoption of the digit ‘0’. Zero is an infinite number with no value. In other words it cannot be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided. People in the ancient times started maths with counting and solving a problem. The oldest problem in math’s was probably addition and subtractions. Slowly man learned about division and multiplication as well. They found that division and multiplication solved a math problem faster than addition and subtraction. However before the adoption of zero in the Western world, human beings had already discovered abacus, which was a simple instrument, designed to perform mathematical calculations. The abacus may be called as the first Computer and when some one taught another person how to use the abacus to solve problems, became the first computer training for students.

Many years hence, other devices were created to aid in mathematical computations, yet the original 'computer' - the abacus - remained.  Through the aid of electronics came the first computer.  This first computer could fill a room.  In fact, there are many from that era in use to this day:  they still fill a room.  The purpose of the first computer was to complete complex mathematical operations in little or no time.

In the beginning, computers were the forte of scientists and mathematicians.  Then they became more prevalent making their way into universities and other higher learning institutions.  At the universities and other higher learning institutions sat students undergoing their first computer training classes.  Students anxiously stood in line after line to sign up for computer training classes:  many were turned away due to over-crowding.

As technology advanced, these super computers began shrinking in size.  In fact, computers can now be found that are smaller than a cornflake: they are properly termed microchips or mini-computers.  Along with the shrinking size of the computer came the shrinking price of a computer.  Eventually, computers became affordable enough for the average Joe to own.  Not only were they small and affordable, they were portable (think laptop).

With all of these computers, somebody needed to know how to use them.  Universities offered computer training courses as well as small colleges and technical colleges.  What was once considered an intellectuals pursuit only, has become commonplace.  High Schools initially offered computer sciences where basic computer programming and computer basics were taught.  The computer then made it's way into middle schools and on into elementary schools.  It's come to the point where everyone attending public schooling is exposed to some form or another of computer training.

It's gotten to the point where young school-aged students began having more experience than the older generation.  In fact, it seemed they were outpacing their elders in at least that one area of expertise.

The older generation began to recognize the need for computer training.  Many were busy raising the younger generation.  This generation found it difficult to take time to attend formal computer training in a classroom environment.  Still others, busied by a full time job faced a similar dilemma.  Computers were in the workplace and the higher paying jobs were going to those with computer knowledge or outright expertise.

Companies, institutions, and computer experts recognized this and took advantage of it.  The lack of computer training and or lack of time created a niche.  Computer training took off.  Online computer training courses became available for just about anyone that could find their way onto the Internet.  This truly brought computers to everyone.

Considering the above account, one can't help but wonder what the next step in the growth of computer training will be....Read more
